Obituary for Frederick William Olme

Frederick William Olme was born on December 10, 1924 in Bayfield, Colorado to Fredrick and Ida Mae (Crawford) Olme. He passed away on December 13th, 2014 after a brief stay at the Colorado State Veteran’s Center at Homelake, Colorado. Fred was one of 7 children who eventually settled with his family outside of Del Norte, Colorado. He attended Del Norte High School, and during WWII he enlisted in the Navy before completing his senior year where he served during the war. After his honorable discharge, he finished high school and attended Adams State College. It was during this time that he started his career with Rio Grande County Road and Bridge. Fred worked as a maintenance worker and worked his way up to Road Supervisor where he worked as supervisor for 39 years.
Fred was very active in his community serving as a Volunteer firefighter with the Monte Vista Fire Department for 21 years. He was also the President of the Colorado State Firefighters Association in 1977. He was a long time member of the Monte Vista Rotary and earned the award of the Paul Harris Fellow. Fred was a past President of the Monte Vista School Board as well as a longtime athletic and Band booster for the Monte Vista Schools, a past president of the Monte Vista Cemetery Association and a past board member of the Santa Maria Trout Club and was associated in various capacities in numerous 4H projects. He also was a member of the Ski High Parade Committee for over 30 years, and a member of the Monte Vista Methodist Church for over 56 years.
Fred’s greatest passion, outside of riding the range as a cowboy in his early years, was being a mason. Fred was a member for over 35 years of the Monte Vista Masonic Lodge #73 and had served as Worshipful Master of both Monte Vista Lodge #73 and the Creede Amethyst Lodge # 94. Fred was a 33 degree mason and also a longtime member of the Sand Dunes Alkali Shrine Club and assisted with many of the Shrine circuses held in Monte Vista. Fred also helped with, and drove in, many parades in the Shrines “ Smokin Charlie” float.
Fred is survived by his wife of 60 years, Yvonne, four children; Anita (Tead) Cranson, Terri (Chris) Lindahl, Bob(Kristy) Olme and Colleen (Tracy) Vanderpool. He is also survived by his brother Vernon(Karen), 6 grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday December 20, 2014 at the Monte Vista Methodist church at 2:00 PM with Masonic services by the members of the Monte Vista Masonic Lodge #73.
