Obituary for Ivan Robert Johnson

Longtime Monte Vista resident Ivan Robert Johnson, 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family and under hospice care at his home on April 7, 2016.

Ivan was born in Blanca, Colorado, one of ten children to Walter Awood Johnson and Blanche Ellen Coombs Johnson. He married and was sealed for time and all eternity to Shirley Ellen Knight on June 8, 1967 in the Mesa, Arizona temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Ivan was a Farmer and Rancher and raised many different crops but mostly grain, alfalfa and some potatoes. He also enjoyed animals especially raising pigs and cattle. Ivan was a hard worker and was very honest in his work. In his spare time he loved sports, especially baseball. He cherished the time spent with his family camping, fishing and spending time together and referred to his children as his “pure quality crew”. Earlier in his years, Ivan was a bowler. He had a good sense of humor and was always ready to tease or joke around, all in good fun. Ivan was very supportive of his wife, children and grandchildren in all their endeavors.

He is survived by his wife Shirley Johnson of Monte Vista, his children Tamara (Bryan) Davies of Alpine, UT, Shannon (Marc) Nielsen of Gilbert, AZ, Stanton (Jaelyn) Johnson of Monte Vista, CO, Kristi (Clint) Huffaker of La Jara, CO, Shane (Ashley) Johnson of Monte Vista, CO and Kari (Spencer) Thompson of Hyde Park, UT; his sister Betty Tirrell of Bluffdale, UT; as well as his grandchildren Brittany Davies, Kaitlin (Brennan) Jensen, Clayton, Chad, Micah, Erik and Bryson Davies, Hayden, Christian, Carson and Mckinley Nielsen, Madison, Shayna, Braquel and Braelyn Schiermeyer, Dynae, Marissa, Lacey, Blake and Kortney Johnson, Hadyn, Kyree, Tori and Troy Huffaker, Kolten, Kaysen, Trace, Tyson and Koy Johnson, Jordyn, Kaleb, Carson and Brooklyn Thompson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Ivan is preceded in death by his parents Walter and Blanche, his infant son Clayton Awood Johnson, his brothers and sisters: Margaret Kent, Aileen Averill, Helen Truitt, Clayton Johnson, Walter Howard Johnson, Lois Milyard, Perry “Bill” Johnson and James “Bud” Johnson.

Visitations will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday, April 10th at the Rogers Family Mortuary, 404 Morris St. in Monte Vista, and Monday, April 11th from 10-10:45 a.m. in the Primary Room at the church. A Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 11th at the Rio Grande Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Interment will be held in the Sanford Cemetery following the funeral services.
