Obituary for Margaret Divine Polston

Margaret Divine Polston
Lifelong San Luis Valley native Margaret Divine Polston, 96, passed away on October 10, 2016. She was born on March 9, 1920 in Monte Vista, Colorado to early farmers Lafayette “Lafe” and Fern Abernathy Divine. Margaret attended the Sargent School District for twelve years, graduating high school in 1938. Margaret grew up always wanting to be a teacher and obtained her degrees from Adams State. She worked her way through college, at one time serving as Prexy Ira Richardson’s office aide. She received her B.A. (1943), and was one of the last to receive a Lifetime Certificate for teaching. Margaret later obtained her M.A. (1968). She taught first grade for 34 years in the Alamosa School District. Her educational career began at Boyd School where she and her husband had a home located on the playground, and it concluded at East Side Elementary. A highlight of her career was when in 1981, after retirement, that school was renamed Margaret D. Polston Primary in her honor.

Margaret married Marvin A. Polston in June of 1945. Her survivors include daughter Judy Kay and Bob Jones of Alamosa, grandson Jason A. Jones, granddaughter-in-law Terri, and great-granddaughter Aspen, of Florida, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

Margaret’s husband, as well as her brothers, Robert, Carl, Jim, and Lloyd Divine and her sister Eleanor Mickelson all preceded her in death.

She was co-editor of the South Coloradan and the college annual, until most activities and awards were curtailed due to WWII. In earlier years, Margaret was a member of P.E.O., Delta Kappa Gamma and Eastern Star. Until the end, she was an avid newspaper, magazine, and book reader, and enjoyed the daily crossword puzzle (as long as she had the answers the next day). She relished phone calls and visits from her numerous friends. Margaret corresponded often with post cards—many have said they didn’t know so much information could be included in such a limited amount of space. In 2013, Margaret was especially proud to be named as a recipient to ASU’s Educators Hall of Fame. She particularly enjoyed playing bridge through the years.

She took pride in the fact that she always remembered former students by face, if not by name. She taught hundreds of first graders to read. Margaret always felt that she was instrumental in a child’s first experience to the written word and that first grade would set the tone for the rest of a student’s path for learning.

Cremation was chosen and a memorial service will be held at the Methodist Church in Alamosa on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. Memorial contributions are suggested for the Meals On Wheels program or a charitable cause of one’s choice.
