Mary “Jean” Paterson, 91, passed away peacefully at The Bridge at Alamosa assisted living
center in Alamosa on November 11, 2016 under hospice care.

Jean was born in Logansport, Indiana on June 30, 1925 to Raymond Guy Kingery and Effie Marie Pherson Kingery. Her very modest and humble beginnings began in Indiana where their family shared a home with another family during the depression. She married George R. Paterson and together they raised their children in Annapolis, Maryland and were devoted to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Annapolis, Md. After moving to Colorado in 2012, Jean became a faithful member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Alamosa. In their spare time, they were active in the Episcopal Church and were national leaders in Marriage Encounter. Jean earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Goddard College, Vermont in 1980, after her children were out the house and on their own. For approximately two decades, she was the Office Manager and Bookeeper for Providence Center, a school for special needs adults. After working as a Career Counselor, Jean finished her professional career as an Admissions Counselor at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Md until 2011, when she retired to care for her husband. She was very active politically up until the very end.

Jean was the loving mother of Rollin Ray Paterson who preceded her in death after serving four years in the U.S. Army and the Merchant Marines. Her second son, Michael Lee Paterson, who is an Emergency Medicine Physician, survives as well as her daughter in law Patricia Anaya Paterson, who is a Physical Therapist. Jean’s daughter Jacqueline Marie Paterson, a Speech Language Pathologist, resides in Annapolis, Maryland. She is also survived by her grandchildren Jennifer, Aiyana, Michael, Gabriela and Luke and her great-grandchildren George, Rowan, Sam, Lif, Nathaniel and Elizabeth.

Jean is preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2014, her son Rollin, her granddaughter Katerina Paterson and her brother Hubert “Bud” Kingery.

Cremation was chosen and a Celebration of Life gathering will be held 1:30 pm Sunday, November 13, 2016 at The Bridge at Alamosa.
