Valorie Sandra “Sandy” Cortez 64

Valorie Sandra “Sandy” Cortez resident of Alamosa gained her angel wings on January 19, 2017 after a courageous six month battle with breast cancer. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that she had touched in so many ways throughout her life.
Sandy was born in Alamosa Colorado on March 24, 1952 to the late Lewis and Juanita (Valdez) Stockham. Sandy graduated from Alamosa High School and received an associate’s degree in nursing from Trinidad Junior College.

She worked for and retired from Safeway after 29 years; first in the deli then as a meat cutter. For the last 20 years she has been working as a registered nurse. It was a life long-dream of hers to become a nurse. Sandy did many traveling nursing assignments; including two at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. She truly enjoyed being nurse.

Sandy loved working, reading, baking, shopping, all holidays especially Christmas but her true passion was her grandchildren.

She was the beloved wife of Benjamin Cortez for over 45 years. Sandy will forever be remembered by her beloved children Kristi (Rod) Silver, Amber (Nick) Cortez and Tyler (Jennifer) Cortez, treasured grandchildren Danica, Delaney, Destin Sandoval and Dariana and Daniel Cortez, loving brothers and sister Harvey Stockham, Jake Maestas and Delsey Manual, many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins, along with countless other friends and family whom were blessed to know her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Juanita Stockham, mother and father in-law, Benjamin and Minnie Cortez, beloved sister, Constance Garcia, sister in-law, Bobby Stockham and step grandson, Gavin Silver.

Cremation was chosen. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday January 25th 2017 at the Sacred Heart Church in Alamosa.
