Obituary for David Neil Cowan Jr.

David Neil Cowan Jr.
Dave Cowan of La Jara, Colorado passed away March 16, 2017 at 68 years of age. He is currently sitting at Jesus’ feet and NOT in a wheelchair!

Having worked as a physician’s assistant in the Valley for over 20 years, Dave is a well-known and beloved member of our community who will be missed greatly. Dave was best known for his steadfast perseverance in the face of adversity, his passion for taking care of people and most importantly, his love of the Lord. He had a great sense of humor and if he ever teased you, it meant he liked you. He never complained about his own pain but rather, always wanted to know how everyone else was doing.

Born to Neil and Edith Cowan on December 19, 1948, Dave grew up in Mosca and was a 1966 graduate of Sangre de Cristo High School. After serving as a medic in the U.S. Army from 1967-1971 he attended Adams State and earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology by 1974. Later Dave attended Kettering College of Medical Arts in Ohio and became a physician’s assistant. He ran a medical clinic in Medicine Bow, Wyoming for several years before returning to the San Luis Valley and working in Conejos County. A car accident in 1996 left Dave paralyzed from the chest down but he continued working anyway until his retirement three years ago.

Dave leaves behind his cherished wife of 48 years, Pauline, who he loved to his last breath. He also leaves his children: Brian (Audrey) Cowan of Alamosa, CO, Dennis (Katie) Cowan of Littleton, CO, Kyle (Kristen) Cowan of Cheyenne, WY, Paula (Loren) Fritz of Monte Vista, CO, and Joshua (Lisee) Cowan of Denver, CO. Dave’s grandchildren, of whom he was unendingly proud, are Cody Cowan, Caleigh Cowan, Cameron Cowan, Lacey Cowan, Donovan Cowan, Kaleb Cowan, Keturah Cowan, Troy Fritz, Rachael Fritz, Nathan Cowan, Jaiden Cowan, Joziah Cowan and Judah Cowan. Dave also leaves his siblings Laura (Swede) Hansen of Kiowa, CO, Marshall (Judy) Cowan of Pueblo, CO, Dan (Jane) Cowan of La Jara, CO, Dick (Kay) Cowan of Littleton, NC, and Patty (Gene) Vinson of Imperial, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Neil & Edith Cowan, and sisters Joyce Crow and Jean Mickelsen.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday March 22, 2017 at the Calvary Bible Chapel in Alamosa. A visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday evening, March 22, 2017 at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa. Burial will take place in the Homelake Veterans Cemetery in Monte Vista. Contributions are suggested to the Calvary Bible Chapel and may be made in care of the funeral home office.

Rogers Family Mortuary of Alamosa is in care of the arrangements. Online condolences, remarks and tributes may be left for Dave’s family by visiting www.RogersFunerals.com
