Obituary for Joseph Charles Atencio

Alamosa resident Joseph Charles Atencio, 65, died March 28, 2017 at his home in Alamosa.

Joseph was born in Montebello, California to Samuel and Marie Atencio. He worked for several years as a volunteer through Peace Corps and was stationed in Mauritania, Africa. Following his time in Africa, Joseph moved to the San Luis Valley where he could continue his efforts in volunteering through La Puente with the Food Bank and the Community Garden.

Joseph loved to read and enjoyed learning about history and culture. In his spare time he liked to play guitar. He had a special way about him and especially enjoyed the interactions with children, they loved him.

He is survived by his brother Leonard (Angela) Atencio of Alhambra, CA; his sister-in-law Myrna Atencio of Whittier, CA; his nephews Ryan, Sam, Nicholas, David and Adam Atencio.

Joseph is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Leo Atencio.

Cremation was chosen and a Celebration of Life Service will be held by his family at a later date. Contributions in his memory are suggested to La Puente, 913 State Ave., Alamosa, CO 81101.
