Condolence: Cuz'n Joe reached out to me a few years ago after a visit to see my Nina & Nino, his beloved parents. His letters, phone calls, emails & texts were filled with family history. I loved the brilliant corny jokes he generously sprinkled into all his musings! He was a true Atencio in this sense and 'the Force was strong in this one.' Joe was like a protective and loving older brother to me ;) . I will miss him, but am comforted that he is reunited with beloved família at Home now...

Condolence From: Joe Giacomelli
Condolence: In 2008-2009, I had the honor of living with Joe in the Morin House (La Puente) for a year. Joe was an incredibly generous person, always looking out for his friends, fellow volunteers, and strangers too. We bonded over our shared love of history (especially military and political history - he loved Cornelius Ryan) and baseball (he was a longtime Dodgers fan).

After I left Alamosa, Joe often sent me packages. Usually, they contained a few history books, filled with annotations he had added on post-it notes. Many of these notes were absolutely hilarious - Joe had a great sense of humor: we shared a lot of laughs along with our other housemates Wayne and Matt. He was particularly fond of the "Godfather" line, "Take the gun, leave the cannoli."

I will always miss Joe's humor, kindness, and warmth. He touched a lot of people's lives.

Rest in peace, my friend.

Condolence: I am one of the many who loved Joe. It wasn't hard, because he loved first. Like so many other LP volunteers, he'd give me chocolate and we bonded over comic books (mostly Brewster Rocket, and Calvin & Hobbes). We both started as (official) LP volunteers at an unconventional time of year - January 2008. All the other volunteers hard begun in August. So, as Joe would say it, he was my "group." But, he & I both bonded deeply with the other volunteers, and the next year's, and then when I left, he'd keep me in the loop about Chas, Landry, Bailey, and all the other volunteers he continued to build friendships with.

I've named Joe an honorary uncle to my kids. He's sent me birthday, Christmas, and "just because" packages. I am honored to own and wear an "Ordinary Joes" softball t-shirt, which he sent me.. (I could tell that experience made him proud.) We texted a lot.. I wasn't ready for the conversations to end. Joe, you're so missed, and always will be.

Condolence: To Joe's family,

I worked with Joe at the Alamosa Food Bank for a few years. I manage the Food Bank here in San Luis and whenever I had to pick up food in Alamosa Joe helped me with loading the food into my SUV. I know he worked many hard and long hours but even when he was tired he had always had a smile and a good word. I missed him a lot when he left the food bank. My thoughts and prayers are with you and remembering Joe in my prayers.
