Obituary for Ernestina Mondragon (Maestas)

Ernestina Mondragon (Maestas)
La Jara resident Maria Ernestina “Tina” Mondragon, 80, passed away December 28, 2017 at her home in La Jara.

Tina was born in Capulin, Colorado on May 8, 1937, the loving daughter of Jose Esmael Maestas and Doloritas Romero Maestas. She married her husband of 59 years, Ambrosio M. Mondragon, Jr. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Capulin, Colorado on October 20, 1958.

Tina worked for many years in the Kitchen at Adams State College as a cook. She loved cooking and baking. In her spare time she could be found crocheting something for her family or enjoying the outdoors camping, fishing, or four-wheeling. She also enjoyed playing cards and casino games and never missed an opportunity to start a loving argument with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Ambrosio Mondragon, Jr. of La Jara; her children June Hayashida of Aurora, CO, Cleo Mondragon of Palm Desert, CA, Corina “Bernice” (Ben) Hendriks of Alamosa, CO, Inez (Larry) Trenn of Aurora, CO, Paul (Laurie) Mondragon of Yuma, AZ, and Maria Mondragon of Savannah, GA; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; her brothers and sisters: John (Luella) Maestas of Antonito, CO, Adelmo (Helen) Maestas of Idaho, Bernal (Connie) Maestas of Alamosa, Francis (Roy) Hall of Colorado Springs, CO, Trinidad (Nancy) Maestas of La Jara, CO, Floyd (Terri) Maestas of Farmington, NM; her sister-in-law Emily Maestas of Idaho; her brother-in-law Raymond Valdez of Capulin, CO; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.

Tina is preceded in death through generations by her parents, her brothers and sister (Eddie Maestas, Samuel Maestas, Sarah Valdez and Gilbert Maestas), her grandchildren (Holly Mondragon and Ryan Mondragon), and her great-grandson (Jeremiah Sanders) as well.

Tina Mondragon’s memory also lives through Mark Mondragon and his partner James Costa. Her memory is eternalized by all. She lives on through the love, the laughter, and the endless teasing that will continue to bring smiles to anybody’s face.

Cremation was chosen, and a Recitation of the Rosary will be held 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 4, 2018 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Capulin. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 5, 2018 also at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Capulin. Interment of ashes will follow services in the Capulin Cemetery.

Services are in the care of Rogers Family Mortuary of Alamosa. To leave online condolences, tributes and remarks for Tina’s family, please visit
