Homer Dale Lewis was born on October 6, 1933, and passed on Saturday April 7, 2018. He was 84 years old, and lived for most of those years in Monte Vista, Colorado. Homer was the child of Franklin Theodore Lewis and Mabel Esther Yates. He was cared for by a stepmother named Hilda May Lewis.
Homer was preceded in death by his three brothers; Chester Homer, Calvin Stratton, and Floyd Aaron.
Homer lived in Virginia for a short time during his childhood, and swimming in a whirlpool in the Shenandoah River was one of his favorite memories. Homer married Joanne Gott on May 10, 1953 in Taos, New Mexico.
Though Homer received little formal education, he was wise beyond his years, and helped raise his children, and their children. Homer was an excellent athlete, and was awarded many roping and bowling awards. He was a member of the “700 Club,” and won roping competitions, including two horse trailers as prizes. He worked as a Warehouse Manager, a Wrangler on a dude ranch, hauled hay on the Baca Grande Ranch, bucked potatoes, and drove trucks. Homer also was a respected 4H leader in the Horse Division, and loved to be outside working, fishing, hunting, riding, roping, and spending time with his loved ones eating and laughing as old Westerns played in the background.
Homer is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joanne Lewis. He is also survived by his four children, Eva Winter, Charlotte Lewis and Toby Salazar, Jodee and her husband Bill Dunn, Lon and his wife Stephanie Lewis. His surviving grandchildren are Dale and Jen Baker and Chester and Teresa Baker, Shelby Winter, Chad and Michelle Lewis, Trevor Lewis, Louden and Stephanie David, David Cavin and Hailee David-Cavin, and Brooke, Bailey, and Blaire Lewis. He is survived by 13 great grandchildren.
All of those who crossed his path could recognize that Homer was the measure of a man, and a kind, humble, and wise person. His presence will be greatly missed, but he will live on in our memories.
