Obituary for Jim Larriva

Jim Larriva
Alamosa resident Jim Larriva, 73, passed away at the Evergreen Nursing Home in Alamosa on May 5th, 2016. Jim was born to Young Jim Fong and Leonila Larriva in Phoenix, Arizona on April 14, 1943.

Jim worked for many years as an educator teaching both Spanish and Art – he earned his Master’s degree in Ceramic Arts at the University of Hawaii. He was also a bold painter, utilizing oil, watercolor, and acrylic paints. Jim was an accomplished author and fervent poet. Most recently, Jim became an advocate for immigration reform, and his art, poetry and writings reflect those passions. In his earlier years, he spent time in the Philippines in the U.S. Peace Corps and later moved to Hawaii where he raised his three children. Fishing was one of his great loves, whether in the oceans of Hawaii or the mountain lakes of Colorado, and he spent many happy hours bowling with his kids and grandkids.

Jim is survived by his children: James (Lynn) Larriva of McKinney, TX, John (Ginger) Larriva of Crescent City, Florida, and Jessica Larriva of Portland, Oregon; his grandchildren: Sally Oen, Chanrady Sar, Gary Oen, Sarany Oen, Joshua Larriva and Alexis Larriva; brother, John Abril, nieces, Lydia (Ross) Johnson and Lori (Don) Burruel-Homa, and nephew, Eddie (Cheryl) Burruel.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Alicia Abril Burruel, brother Albert Abril and his nephew Mike Burruel Jr.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at Rogers Family Mortuary.

Rogers Family Mortuary of Alamosa is in care of the arrangements. Online condolences, tributes and remarks may be left for Jim’s family by visiting his obituary at www.rogersfunerals.com
