Monte Vista – Mary M. Johnson passed away on July 29, 2016 at the Monte Vista Estates. Under the care of the staff that she and the family appreciated, so much.

She was born August 16, 1923 in Ledford, Illinois to Herman and Ethel Mullinix. She was the youngest of six children. She attended schools at East Ledford, Darrisville and graduated with the class of ’41 at Harrisburg, Illinois. In Mary’s lifetime she worked many and unusual jobs, but always had a smile for everyone. On May 22, 1970 at Silsbee, Texas, she married her lifetime love, Charles Edward Johnson. They spent several years in Salem, Missouri before moving “back home” to Creede in 1984. Ed passed away in Creede on May 25, 2008. Mary always said, “the best part of my life was my 38 years with Ed.”

Mary worked several years for the Creede Miner newspaper and other places in Creede. She belonged to the Creede Woodfern Rebekah Lodge, Historical Creede Society and was a member of the Creede Ladies Aid since March of 1944.

She is survived by her grandsons Scott and Phillip “Rowdy” Leggitt, a nephew, several nieces and many loving friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, brothers and sisters.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday August 3, 2016 at the Creede Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Tuesday August 2, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Monte Vista. Contributions are suggested to the Creede Historical Society and may be made in care of the funeral home office.

Mary would like to be remembered as a friend, a good wife and she never met a person she didn’t like.
