Obituary for Ida Mary Martinez (Chavez)
Lifelong Monte Vista resident Ida Mary Martinez, 89, passed away peacefully at the San Luis Care Center on October 28, 2016. Ida was born on May 2, 1927 in Monte Vista to Luis and Francisquita Chavez. She married Leo Martinez and spent many happy years together before his passing in 1984.
Ida was known as mom by more than just her children. She raised her kids as well as helped raise grandkids, nieces, nephews, or anyone else in the neighborhood. She was a one of a kind woman that had a heart of gold and would never hesitate to volunteer her time and abilities to those in need. Whether it be helping cook for a church activity or helping her friends and family she would always put everything she had into it. Ida cared more about her family than anyone thought possible. They truly were her life and will be missed dearly by each and every one of them.
Ida is survived by her children; Roland C. Atencio of Alamosa, Robert E. Martinez of Monte Vista. Her grandson whom she helped raise and treated as a son, Eric T. Atencio of Alamosa. As well as four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and numerous other nieces nephews and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Martinez; her son Ronald W. Atencio of Monte Vista; her parents Luis and Francisquita Chavez. As well as her siblings: Lee V. Chavez, Ben Chavez, Edward Chavez, Paul Chavez, Louise Martinez, and Ruth Chavez Bustos.
A Recitation of the Rosary will be held Thursday, November 3, 2016 at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Monte Vista beginning at 7:00 P.M. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, November 4, 2016 beginning at 10:00 A.M. also at St Josephs. Interment will follow services at Homelake Veterans Cemetery.
